October, 5 at the assembly hall of the University solemn opening ceremony of new department at the faculty of philosophy took place with the support of the Federal national and cultural autonomy (FNCA) of Greeks of Russia and the Charitable Foundation of Ivan Savvidi.

The corresponding agreement between the Charitable Foundation and the University was signed within the confines of Cross-year of Russia-Greece in 2016.

«The creation of the department is a proof of our deep and strong relations with Russian people, with Russia and with the universities of Russia», — said Periklis Mitkas, the rector of the Aristotle University at the opening ceremony.

Ivan Savvidi, the President of the FNCA of Greeks of Russia, referring to the audience, spoke about the growing interest in Russian language in the world.

«The conducted researches have shown that for the last five years the Russian language from the seventh position in the rating of the studied foreign languages has confidently moved to the second place. Experts-philologists say that more than million inhabitants of the country today are quality native speakers of the Russian language. From year to year, business cooperation between Greece and Russia is strengthening. Possession of the Russian language becomes a competitive advantage for young people in hiring. A number of educational institutions specializing in promoting Russian culture is growing. According to our estimates, today there are more than fifty such organizations in Greece. I am confident in the further deepening of bilateral relations between our countries, both at the state level and at the level of human relations. I`m very glad today, opening the Russian Language Department at the Aristotle University, Russian and Greek people made one more important step towards each other. It`s symbolic that this step was made at the Motherland of Thessalonica brothers — Cyril and Methodius, who gave to the world one of the greatest cultural treasures — Cyrillic alphabet», — said Ivan Savvidi.

Elected by the decision of the Senate of the University, the Head of the department, PhD in Philology Tatyana Triandafilidi, spoke in her speech about the three directions of the future work. These are didactic, research and international. She also spoke about the curriculum, which provides teaching of two disciplines on the history of Russia and Russian literature, and two disciplines on the Russian language. First lessons in the classes will start in a week. Students of all faculties of the University will be able to attend the course. Priority direction of scientific research, she said, will be the production of educational material for Greek-speaking students in cooperation with specialists from universities in Greece and Russia.

The creation of the Russian Language Department at the Aristotle University was praised by the president of the International association of teachers of Russian language and literature Lyudmila Verbitskaya. «This fact means the expansion of the Russian language context abroad, first of all, thanks to the talented youth, which in the near future will get even more opportunities to study the Russian language, to develop academic initiatives in the field of Russian researches» — was read out on her behalf in the welcome address.

The solemn opening ceremony of the department ended with a concert program, which pleased all who present. Art collectives of Russian-Greek public organizations performed the works of Tchaikovsky, Shostakovich, the famous «Podmoskovnye Vechera» and the world famous «Kalinka».
